Recently, I just realised that my CDROM and DVDROM did not appear on "my computer" window and this circumstance really annoyed me as I was not able to even use Daemon tools to create virtual drive. Since my computer is quite old, it's hard to find the CDROM driver on the internet (probably no longer available). I kept looking for the driver for quite some time until I reached at Ask Bob Rankin's website.
So here's the way to fix the missing CDROM icon in your computer. First and foremost, make sure that the CDROM drive is physically connected to the computer. In order to ensure the physical connection is intact:
1. Right click on My Computer, then click on Properties. Once System Properties window popups, select the Hardware tab, then press the Device Manager button.
2. Click on the "+" sign next to DVD/CD-ROM Drives and if the device is connected and has power, at least one entry should appear under the heading. As far as I'm concerned, there are two entries under the heading but with the yellow sign (driver is corrupted).
Ok, if there's no entry appear, open your computer to check the wiring. If that's not the case then the CDROM needs software fix. This problem might arise due to some of CD burning softwares unistallation which prevent Windows from accessing the CDROM drive. You can either download the CDROM driver from the internet or do the System Restore in order to fix the problem. If none fix the situation, you need to do the following steps.
- Click Start, then Run, then enter REGEDIT to open the Registry Editor
- Navigate to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Control/Class entry
- Under the Class entry, double click on {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
- In the right-hand pane, click ONCE to select the UpperFilters entry
- Make sure the UpperFilters entry is highlighted, press Delete, then Yes.
- In the right-hand pane, click ONCE to select the LowerFilters entry
- Make sure the LowerFilters entry is highlighted, press Delete, then Yes.
- Close the Registry Editor by clicking File, Exit.
Restart your computer and your CDROM icon should appear on your computer.
