(and Microsoft, if you wish to add). It was just that they realized the need to have a standard for sitemap and to comply with it. Although Sergey & Larry and Jerry & David are good friends, they hardly work together as far as the two most influential internet giants are concerned. i believe it was not really a (collaborative) effort by Google and Yahoo!
