Though WordPress 2.7 will not be delivered on schedule (November 10), we can still test drive the latest version of WordPress after WordPress released the first beta version of upcoming WordPress 2.7 recently. In WordPress 2.7, you can expect new visual style for the dashboard and several new features. WordPress developers are currently working hard to make sure WordPress 2.7 is completely compatible with all browsers because there are few glitches reported in Opera and Internet Explorer (it works fine in Firefox and Safari).

Here are some screenshots of WordPress 2.7

1. WordPress Dashboard

The final version of WordPress will be delivered 2 weeks late but you can download the beta version to get yourself familiar with the new interface and features.

Another late heads up for wordpress users but I'm pretty sure most of you had already noticed the release of WordPress 2.6.1 from the notification in your dashboard. No new feature was introduced in this update but there are more than 60 fixes with few of them related to security. You may want to take a look at the full list of the fixes on WordPress Trac.

The next big release is WordPress 2.7. Looking forward for that!

Yeah, I know it's been a week since its release but it doesn't stop me from writing about another milestone in wordpress development. This new WordPress 2.6 does not only fix up several security issues but also brings a lot new features and functionalities. There aren't many interface changes though but every little thing like the addition of number approved comments at the dashboard really make my day. That's minor one, let's see the significant ones.

1. Google Gear (GG)

I don't really give much attention on what Google Gear can do in improving our experience with WordPress. That's said before I knew it's real potential. Basically the installation of Google Gear will allow you to gain super fast access in your WordPress admin interface. Simply put, WordPress files and images are stored locally thus allow the loading time to be reduced to only fraction of time ( usually it takes about 5-10 seconds ). To activate this thing, you need to install Google Gear here and you can see the difference.

2. Post Version

This feature allows Bloggers to keep track changes made on their posts and page (similar to one found in Google Docs). This feature is particularly useful to writers who like to write and rewrite materials or people who collaborate on posts and want to see who edited what.

3. Theme preview

This feature is only provided in the previous version of WordPress by a plugin, but this time it's hardcoded into WordPress system. Now, before you activate a theme in the selection screen, a popup will come up let you know how exactly your blog will look like in the chosen theme.

4. Press This!

If you drag the bookmarker that resides below the options in the post screen to your toolbar, you will have access to a full-on post editor that you can post URLs in, grab and rehost pictures and images, and even embed video from the page! Basically It enables for easy posting of content from other social networking sites like Digg, Delicious, YouTube etc.

Other features

5. Batch Selecting

6. Plugin Interface

7. Image Captions

8. Word Count

9. Bulk plugin management

10. Better image control (The image uploader bug is now fixed!)

Even though it looks the same from the outside but internal overhauls at the WordPress core give blogger more power in controlling WordPress administration and makes it even easier to share your interests.

WordPress 2.5 was officially released and I just finished upgrading Eches Dot Net to the latest version. Everything went smoothly including the plugins. Make sure to backup your database and your files before commencing the upgrade, who knows something might go wrong. Currently I'm finalizing my current theme theme for public release. There are couples of things need to be done these days so this theme might only be available for download at the earliest next weekend. So, be patient :)

Thanks for the heads up from one of my reader, Mauro about the current release of the unofficial WordPress 2.5. Previously you can only see the glimpse of WordPress from this demo blog but now you can test drive WordPress 2.5 RC 1 in your own server.

As I usually mention earlier on in my previous posts, I rather wait until a week or two after new version was released before I make a move. First and foremost I don't want to put my blog at stake (in case of serious security issue) and secondly I don't want to spend my time unnecessarily to upgrade WordPress script so often. However, in this particular version there are significant changes made. I decided to upgrade prior to the official release so that I can check my WordPress themes compatibility (o2, Damai and 1 upcoming theme).

There are definitely a lot more features are not mentioned here and many little things that I overlook but here are few features that I would like to highlight. I hope this post will entice you to install and test drive this current update yourselves. So where we should start? I have already mentioned about the dashboard interface in my previous post, so let's move on to Widget page first.

1. Widget Page

In WordPress 2.5, the list of available widgets will be displayed on the left side and on the right side is the number of widgetized sidebars. Previously we can simply drag and drop the widgets onto the sidebars but in this version you need to press "add" on widget list before it shows up in the sidebar list. Drag and drop action is still there if you need to reposition the order of the widgets. Only 1 sidebar with all widgets inside it are displayed at 1 time and you need to use drop down list to hop from one sidebar to another.

This new feature makes me lost for a while since I need to figure out how to remove the widgets added in the sidebar.

2. Write Page

The Visual editor looks pretty much the same. Don't be suprised if you cannot find the image uploader right below page editor or anywhere else. In this current version we can see additional toolbar purposely dedicated to add media files (picture, video, audio and other media), thanks to TinyMCE 3. Post in advance feature is now being incorporated into the publish button where you may decide whether to publish immediately or would like to set at a later date or time.

3. Comment page

There is one thing that I like the most about this new comment page; I don't have to scroll down all the way to the bottom page in order to do mass approval, deletion or spam marking and at the same time bloggers can still access all the comments individually.

Wanna learn more about new features in WordPress? Here is the PDF report that boils down everything inside WordPress 2.5.

Themes compatibility

Ok, speaking of theme compatibility, o2 and Damai are OK to be used in wordpress 2.5. Having said that, there are few issues need to be resolved such as 404 error page (not sure yet why it doesn't show up. Anybody wants to enlighten me?) and gravatar. I will upgrade those themes soon so that everything is completely compatible.

Technorati Tags: o2, Damai, wordpress theme, wordpress upgrade, wordpress 2.5

Some files in WordPress 2.1.1 at WordPress.org had been compromised by a cracker and this makes the WordPress files (2.1.1) is not safe for use and widely opened to malicious attack. Here's the excerpt from WordPress' blog.

This morning we received a note to our security mailing address about unusual and highly exploitable code in WordPress. The issue was investigated, and it appeared that the 2.1.1 download had been modified from its original code. We took the website down immediately to investigate what happened.

It was determined that a cracker had gained user-level access to one of the servers that powers wordpress.org, and had used that access to modify the download file. We have locked down that server for further forensics, but at this time it appears that the 2.1.1 download was the only thing touched by the attack. They modified two files in WP to include code that would allow for remote PHP execution.

Upgrade your WordPress file to the latest version now.

Links in your blogroll now support sub-categories and you can add categories on the fly.
Redesigned login screen from the Shuttle project.

More AJAX to make custom fields, moderation, deletions, and more all faster. My favorite is the comments page, which new lets you approve or unapprove things instantly.

Pages can now be drafts, or private.

Our admin has been refreshed to load faster and be more visually consistent.

The dashboard now instantly and brings RSS feeds asynchronously in the background.

Comment feeds now include all the comments, not just the last 10.

Better internationalization and support for right-to-left languages.

The upload manager lets you easily manage all your uploads pictures, video, and audio.

A new version of the Akismet plugin is bundled.

I just upgraded my blog with WordPress and everything seems fine except a few hiccups that I strongly believe originated from few plugins-compatibility issues.

Do you notice feed subscription icon at the top left corner of my blog? As you scroll down this blog, it moves along too. Here is the few steps taken to realise this cool "effect".

1. Add the following CSS code into your CSS file.

Code:

#mini-nav { width: 20px; position:fixed; top: 180px; left:5px;}

This is a great feature that I overlooked eversince I started blogging but InfoMalaya has enlightened me about this feature through this useful post. Obviously if you were going on holiday, you can still put your blog in a blogging "mode", let it updates for itself and this will ensure your loyal subscribers/visitors to receive seamless useful infos over the period of your absence. I’m sure most people know about this.

Here are steps taken to have a post in advance:

1. Write your post as usual.
2. Go to Post Timestamp (at the bottom right sidebar).
3. Edit the time and tick the Edit timestamp box.
4. Publish your post.
5. You are done!

Easy Announcements is a simple plugin yet serves you great service especially when you have new annoucement to be made to your readers. It's strategically placed right at the top of your first post. This position is easily noticeable and effectively deliver your message as wide as possible to your visitors.

The question is why I dont have it? I just found this plugin and it requires a little bit of html. It's easy to setup, of course. Unfortunately, I'm a design freak, so I won't put it on display without proper decor. I am thinking of using a little bit of CSS for the decor and my illeteracy of CSS will sure take me ages to put it up and running in the way intended.

The good news is you can see the screenshot of the easy announcement plugin below, but why not head straight on to the site of this author (Cypherhackz) to see it live! The plugin is in the red faded box. Looks cool yeah with the right CSS tinkering.
