With the increasing number of threats posed by spywares, malwares, adwares, worms and many more; relying solely on an antivirus system seems to be insufficient. The adoption of additional tools into computer security arsenal can significantly reduce malicious threats from zeroing in on our computer based on the fact that no system is 100% foolproof.

Frequent computer users will definitely will be looking for something that is reliable & effective yet available at the minimum cost (free to be precise). So, in this post I would like to give a closer look at Spyware Terminator, a useful freeware that I personally use to keep spyware and adware threats at bay.

Installation

The installation is easy because you just need to follow through the steps given. Prior to installation process you will be asked to install "web safe guard and Crawl Toolbar" feature (it is selected by default). This effectively means searches performed through your Internet browser's search box or typed into the Address Bar will be generated through Crawler.com. Though the searches produced are collected from several search engines such as MSN and Yahoo!, this kind of “feature” could make most advanced users to be skeptical.

While installing the Crawl toolbar does not pose any threats or real benefits, I suggest you to simply opt out for this option.

After the installation you will be given three choices whether to:

1. Scan for spywares right away
2. Enable the real time shield for continuous system protection or
3. Protect against spywares and viruses.

The last option will require you to install Clam Antivirus which will be the integral entity of Spyware Terminator. Regardless of which option chosen, you are advised to update the database to keep to spyware definition up to date. The entire process only takes a few minutes.

User Interface

Users are presented with the summary of Spyware terminator, showing recent updates, warnings related to spyware threats and easy navigation to many features of Spyware Terminator.

Key features

Spyware Removal

This is the main purpose of Spyware Terminator. It will scan your computer for known threats and report findings in a manner that is easy to read and interpret. Every entry is classified accordingly, makes it easy for you to decide if a detected item should be removed or not. Unlike some free software titles, Spyware Terminator will remove all threats for free.

Free Automatic Updates

Spyware Terminator offers the ability to download and install updates automatically. Users are free to dictate how often Spyware Terminator checks for updates and how they are applied.

Free Scheduled Scans

Spyware Terminator gives users the ability to schedule spyware scans on a regular basis to ensure computer integrity. Scans can be scheduled on either a daily or a weekly basis at any hour of the day.

Free AntiVirus Integration

Spyware Terminator has included the popular award winning open-source antivirus, Clam AntiVirus (ClamAV), for optional integration to achieve a higher level of security. ClamAV can be integrated into spyware scans, updates and the real-time protection.

My Thought

The only drawback that can spotted right away by many users is the Crawl toolbar installation which will definitely raise people's eyebrows in term of its reliability. This "feature" probably provides some kind of a revenue stream to the developer, but to be honest, it's not really a good association to a security application like Spyware Terminator.

Having said that, Spyware Terminator is an effective anti malware application. There are tonne of great functions that cannot be found within its competitors. If you wish to put a try on this freeware you can download it from the following link.

Many programs like to start when computer starts to boot. The problem starts when all of these programs try to start simultaneously, fighting for CPU cycles and disk access. For average computer it tends to take ages to load everything to the extent you can't even move your mouse. One of common methods usually used by computer is by removing the the start up programs via Run.. > msconfig. This will effectively kill the startup process of your choice but another issue arise. You may not want to kill the program, you just don't want it to compromise your windows load time.

Wouldn't it be great if we can somehow delay the loading process of these programs so that we don't reach the bottleneck when our computers start to kick off? So here is another useful program you might want to put under your sleeves.

Startup Delayer is an effective program in order to cure Windows boot bottleneck problem. I know the name of this software doesn't evoke thoughts of faster load but It will allow you to setup how many seconds after Windows has started, to load each application. It configures timed delays for each application that starts after Windows boots up. So in some ways it manages a better way of Windows load process by prioritizing the system processes and delaying the not-so-important programs.

So, by using Startup Delayer, you can space out the start time for each application. The tweaking of the timing might be tricky though and needs multiple boots to fine tune the things just right. However there's automatic mode so the feature should come handy.

Do you consider of using it? Use the link below to download Startup Delayer.

USB Safely Remove is a handy replacement for the standard 'Safely Remove Hardware' tool. It does everything the default one does and yet it offers more. The default tool that comes with Windows XP requires several clicks before a safe unplug can be performed. If you have several hotplug such as USB, SATA and firewire you may need to take a closer look at which device you try to unplug from because it doesn't show the name of devices in the list but only names them according to driver alphabets.

With USB Safely Remove, it will make life easier and save time. The unplug is done with only 1 click. The USB connections are named according to their actual device names, thus make the unplug process almost instant without the need to scrutinize which USB connections belong to which devices.

Apart from that, it allows you to hide devices so that you don't accidentally stop them and provides you with keyboard shortcut to perform stopping action. When the USB connection cannot be unplugged it will tell you what application that keeps stopping the USB connection from being unplugged. The following points summarize why it does much better than the standard tool.

The ability to hide any device from the 'stop' menu.

Uses real device names and allows renaming.

Keyboard shortcuts for easy device stopping.

Unique menu for one-click stop.

Programs autorun on device plugging/unplugging.

It tells you why a device cannot be stopped immediately.

For $20 you can get the full version but suffice to say, the free version itself is more than enough. Visit USB Safely Remove for more information.

I've been using Vdownloader for quite some time but unfortunately the current version of Vdownloader is not fully functional. Waiting for ages for the software to be updated, I can't wait any longer and started finding other alternatives that might be doing as good as Vdownloader or much better than it. Finally I stumbled upon Tubesucker, a free software that claims has more features than the rest.

Tubesucker comes with 2 versions; free and premium one which cost you roughly $40. I'm interested in giving review on the free version as I myself using that one. This versatile software has a batch converter, and a built-in media player. With the built in website integrated into TubeSucker, it lets you batch download videos of your favorite artist from YouTube. All you need to do is just key in topic or artist name, click and go. When you come back later on, you already have tons of videos on your hard drive ready for instant playback.

In addition to that it also has more converter formats including AVI, 3GP, MGP, MP4, MP3, WAV, WMV, WMA, MOV. I just realized it can do the conversion after couple of weeks of using it (I put the blame on its interface that grows in complexity as compared to Vdownloader which provides intuitive interface lol). So, for those who might overlook this feature (like me) look at Preferences tab and the conversion option is at the right bottom corner.

Technorati Tags: youtube, tubesucker, vdownloader, tips and tricks
