If you have been blogging for a quite a while you must have been using several SEO tools (Alexa, Pagerank, Compete Raking and list goes on and on) either for checking your sites or sneaking up on performance of your competitor's sites on regular basis. Most of them are easily implemented via Firefox but this time around, I would like to introduce Chrome SEO, a plugin used specifically in Chrome.

I really like this extension because it loads pretty fast and doesn't consume much memory as I expect. The extension appears on the top left side of the address bar. So when you try to pull out data (SEO stats) from a URL, just simply visit the website and hit the extension icon. A list of data as follow will popup.

From there, we can click on any result to see for relevant information. The extension features Keyword Highlight NoFollow links, Research Tool (Alpha Version), backlinks number, pages indexed number, social bookmark count, current traffic, rankings and Domain Details (like Whois, Server Location, DNS etc).

Chrome SEO is being used by hundred of thousands Chrome users, making it one of the most popular extensions. Webmasters, make sure to keep it in your sleeves.

Duplicate content or vastly similar content that is accessible through multiple URLs has been haunting webmasters for a long time.

Duplicate content or vastly similar content that is accessible through multiple URLs has been haunting webmasters for a long time. Discussions on how it affects Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and possible countermeasures to prevent search engines from spelling their wrath over sites with duplicate content continued unabated. There was, however, no definitive solution or no real mechanism being employed by search engines until recent development where canonical tag was first introduced.

Google, Yahoo and Microsoft have finally united in order to reduce duplicate content on the net. With the "collaboration" of the 3 search engines on this particular matter, webmasters can deal the issue with full confidence by making full use of the canonical link tag. This special tag allows you to specifically specify your preferred version of a URL.

This issue may appear a bit confusing to many people without proper example to illustrate it but the following is the example how duplicate content (especially on dynamic sites like forum) may occur because a site might allow various sort orders for a page

1. http://forums.digitalpoint.com/forumdisplay.php?f=5
2. http://forums.digitalpoint.com/forumdisplay.php?f=5&daysprune=-1&order=asc&sort=title
3. http://forums.digitalpoint.com/forumdisplay.php?f=5&daysprune=-1&order=desc&sort=lastpost

From the above example we can clearly see that a particular page can be accessed via multiple URLs. This has several adverse effects on an affected site like less of the site may get crawled and each page may not get full link credit.

Illustrations by Matt Cutts

In order to avoid it, you can simply add the tag to specify your preferred version like the following example

<link rel="canonical" href="http://forums.digitalpoint.com/forumdisplay.php?f=5" />

inside the
section of the duplicate content URLs and Google will understand that the duplicates all are pointing to the canonical URL (the specified URL).

This tag will operate in a similar way to a 301 redirect for all URLs that display the page with this tag.

Links to all URLs will be consolidated to one specified as canonical.

Search engines will consider this URL a "strong hint" as to the one to crawl and index.

For WordPress users, chill out! A plugin for canonical tag is now available for download. The following is few more detail references on "Canonical Tag" that may interest you.

Webmasters Tools was purposely set up by Google to help webmasters to improve their indexing and ranking in Google search engine. To help webmasters to have a better insight of Search Engine Optimization (SEO), Google has produced an ebook that will answer questions related to SEO like how Google index your site, how to increase website visibility and can Google find our site. If you have similar questions or just started to learn what Search Engine Optimization is all about, this ebook is a great head start as it covers basic optimization.

There are several common areas that webmasters really need to optimize. These include but not limited to improving title, meta tags, description, content creation, site navigation, URL structure and anchor text. Though the content is more suitable for newbies (there are lot of jargons to learn about and of lot of new stuffs), experienced webmasters will still find this ebook to be valuable as it serves them as a revision or most likely there are few things that might be overlooked.

What are you waiting for? Download it now!

Pagerank & Alexa ranking are not the the only factors that people will look at when analyzing the strength of a website. There are many elements come into play including but are not limited to basic on-page optimizations, domain age, inbound links, number of indexed pages in search engines, backlinks from social mediasphere (i.e. Digg, StumbleUpon et al) and xhtml, css validation.

Advertisers of these days are more concerned on how a website evolves; whether they are artificially boosted (blackhat) or naturally developed. I came across a few useful FREE SEO websites that provide thorough analysis as I hang out a lot in DP forum. Some of the websites are now buried deep in DP archives and I couldn't find a way to dig them out as most of them resided in threads totally unrelated to SEO things. So I decided to collect and list them (SEO tools that I still remember vividly) in this post.

Here is a list of FREE SEO tools.

1. Website Grader - This website provides a score that incorporates things like website traffic, SEO, social popularity and other technical factors. It also provides some basic advice on how the website can be improved from a marketing perspective.

2. Xinu Returns - Find out how well your site is doing in popular search engines, social bookmarking and other site statistics.
Note: I've seen websites with similar framework and template so I presume Xinu run on a similar script.

3. URL Trends - Features Pagerank, Alexa, number of baclinks from Yahoo & Google and many more. Fast at delivering result.

4. IwebTool - Provide pagerank prediction, in-depth analysis on backlink information, multi rank checker, website speed test and few more analysis.
Note: Pagerank prediction doesn't work most of the time.

5. SEO Book Tool - Features Search Analytics Tools, Keyword Research Tools, Competitive Research Tools, Link Analysis Tools & Search Engine Ranking Checkers.

6. SEO Digger - SEO Digger is a decent keyword gathering and research tool but what it really helps me with is determining a given site's overall theme and keyword focus. Apart from a list of search queries, wordtracker and overture results are also determined (keyword popularity calculated by Wordtracker.com). Data is also CSV-exportable.

7. QuarkBase - Provide overall stats related to social media popularity, traffic details and technical information.

8. Check Page Rank of Internal Pages - This is one of my favorite SEO tools and particularly useful after every pagerank update. The only downside is, it only registers 100 entry before it comes to a stop.
Note: Sometimes it's not responding but that is the only working Internal Pagerank checker I found so far.

There are many great FREE SEO tools out there but not listed here. If you find them to be useful and would like to share with our readers, please don't hesitate to add up your favorite SEO tool by commenting this post.

The idea of getting a great list of dofollow blogs came into my mind when I saw few people in digitalpoint forums managed to get good return by selling list of high pagerank, dofollow blogs. There must be some kind of tricks or automated software that can do the job. My quest on this trick/software didn't give any credible lead until I stumbled upon Fast Blog Finder. Before I proceed I would like to show you something interesting.
.
I bet some of you must be a little bit skeptical on the notion that high pagerank backlink can have significant impact in boosting up our pagerank. But let see this site (http://www.mobiletech-info.com). It has a valid PR6 after only 4 months of existence.

Judging from Alexa ranking and number of backlinks, it's not really in a good shape to even reach PR5. The definitive answer can be found only after the backlinks were put under scrutiny.

You can check the first top backlink yourself. It doesn't have any nofollow tag at all! Wouldn't this prove that backlink from high pagerank sites carry heavy weight in Pagerank calculation?

Now we are back to our main topic. Basically Fast Blog Finder will find dofollow blog posts for you. Before I go on further, let's get this thing straight. The idea is not to spam them but finding blogs which belong to the same niche as yours and comment intelligently. Give something insightful and constructive rather than leaving comment like "Good post" et al. It doesn't add any value at all. Ok, I don't want to dwell on this issue any longer, it would be better to get down to this lovely program.

First you need to download the program file at Fast Blog Finder. Install it and once done you will be asked to fill up a form so that they can email you the activation key. After that you can start do the searching.

When you are done with the searching you will be presented with posts that carry dofollow and nofollow tag. To further fine tune your search you can use "your keywords" + "commentluv". That way, dofollow tag will be applied to your homepage link and your last post as well.

This program is FREE but the search result is limited to 50 blogs for each keyword. You may upgrade this program for $49 if you want to have unlimited number of blogs for every search. 50 blogs are actually more than enough because we are not playing with numbers but quality. Remember we are not going to spam them; rather we want to add something useful on those posts and at the same time reaps the rewards.

Download Fast Blog Finder

[via]

Before we go to the list of social bookmarking sites, I prefer to give brief introduction of what social bookmarking is all about because I'm sure some of you might not familiar with this term. Skip the following part if you wish and take a look at the long list by clicking here.

What is it?
Social bookmarking is the practice of saving bookmarks to a public Web site and tagging them with keywords. To start a collection of social bookmarks, you need to register with a social bookmarking site, which lets you store bookmarks, add tags of your choice, and designate individual bookmarks as public or private. Some sites will, from time to time, verify whether the bookmarks still work, notifying users of a broken URL. Visitors to social bookmarking sites can search for resources by keyword, person, or popularity and see the public bookmarks, tags, and classification schemes that registered users have created and saved. So, it is particularly useful when collecting a set of resources.

Because social bookmarking services indicate who created each bookmark and provide access to that person’s other bookmarked resources, users can easily make social connections with other individuals interested in just about any topic. Users can also see how many people have used a tag and search for all resources that have been assigned to that tag. In this way, the community of users over time will develop a unique structure of keywords to define resources; something that has come to be known as a “folksonomy”.

It's really time consuming if you are browsing through a website and really keen to learn about its pagerank, alexa ranking, number of backlinks it has and all SEO data associated to it especially when it involves many sites. SEO Quake simplify your chores by automatically displaying all SEO data at the top of websites you drop by and is currently available to the Internet Explorer and Firefox users. Basically, this plugin consists of two functional parts that are Seo Bar and Inclusion of Parameters in Search Engine Result Pages (SERPs)

SeoBar
SeoBar can be described as an additional toolbar, which shows the values of selected parameters for the page currently opened in the browser window. Set of parameters shown by SeoBar is fully customizable by user.

Inclusion of parameters in SERPs
After submission of the query into the search engine user is presented with SERP with search results. SeoQuake shows values of the parameters for search results under each search result shown on SERP. Set of parameters shown is fully customizable by user. Loading of parameters can be handled in two different ways – simultaneously with the loading of the SERP or after SERP loading, by user demand.

Parameters
While having a wide range of default parameters, SeoQuake also gives users the opportunity to create their own parameters and also group them into presets and switch between these presets on the fly, during the work.

Have you ever considered of buying a link on a high Pagerank website to get a good quality one way backlink? For those who are serious and have bunch of money to spent to build up links pointing to your websites, you better give attention on the PageRank fraud.

It is achieved when offending domains use a 301 or 302 redirects that point their sites to sites with a high Pagerank. This is a well known trick in the SEO (Search Engine Optimization) world, but people who aren't familiar with SEO are most likely to fall for this.

Where to check if a website has genuinely high PageRank or a fake one? Head on to PageRank detection tool and follow the instruction. You can check this website, it passes most of the PageRank checkers but the exploit is exposed when it's checked at PageRank detection tool. Here's the screenshot of the result.

Note: The screenshot is taken on the same day as this post is written and the result might be different in the future

The following guides show you details on how to detect a website with fake PageRank website.

How can I check for fake PR?
You can use the fake PR check tool here. All you need to do is compare the URL you submitted to the results. If the domain name you entered has fake PR, the results will show a different domain name to the one you submitted.

Inconclusive results?
If it returns "Sorry, we cant verify the pagerank for this page", then Google is unable to determine whether the PR is fake or not. If this is the case then you can use archive.org's WayBack Machine to view old versions of a site to see whether or not a redirect was being used when the page was archived.

If you use archive.org to view the site's history and the address in the URL changes when you click to view a result, then the domain was being redirected on that date.

Example:
hmdonl.com on February 11th 2005.

http://web.archive.org/web/20050211...www.hmdonl.com/

In this example the end of that URL changes to another domain name, meaning that on the date the site was archived the domain was being redirected. A good indicator of fake PR.

Are the results 100% conclusive?
There is a chance that the results are not correct.
The fake PR checker uses Google results so if the domain's redirect has been removed and the results are updated on Google, the fake PR checker won't see the previous redirect. That won't happen overnight though.

Archive.org has no recent archives, they're usually at least a year old, so they won't show the most recent redirects. Also there is a chance that the domain could have been used legitimately after it was archived, so don't go back to results from 1999 and expect them to be relevant.

Used in combination though, they're very good at helping you spot fake PR.

Abundant of useful information revolving around Google SEO tips, successful blogging tips, online marketing tips are consistently piling up on his blog as he keeps writing. Recently he has taken great effort on compiling blogging tips (The Successful Blogger) and SEO tips (Bubble Gum SEO Links) that are collected from various places and they are published regularly on weekly basis.

To keep momentum going, he introduced weekly post (SEO’s Friday Night Sites) that's posted every friday. It's arranged in the same analogous to Friday Night Fights where visitors will take side and are most welcomed to throw up ideas on popular and highly debated issues (things related to SEO & blogging). So, the more people there, the merrier.

Whether you are new or have been around blogosphere for quite some time, this is one of many places where you should pay regular visits as fresh tips and useful content keep coming in.

Before I list down the list of PR6 to PR 9 directories, it's essential to understand why directory is important towards your website SEO and what criterion that constitute a SEO-friendly directory.

What is SEO-friendly directory?
SEO friendly directory means one that contains pages which are spiderable by search engine robots and can be assigned a PR (pagerank). A SEO friendly directory will help to improve your website PR should yours is listed in the directory. There's a lengthy explanation of criterion that constitute SEO friendly directory, they can be boiled down to the following brief summary.

SEO friendly directory does not:

• Use Redirects
• Use no index, no follow tags
• Have too many links on one page
• Prevent directory pages with robots.txt
• Put listings too deep for a single category

SEO friendly directory does:

• Make the links look readable as static links
• Use plain HTML < a href > links
• Put links with meaningful anchor text
• Use Mod rewrite
• Use sitemap

The following is the lengthy list of the directories which are sorted out in descending order.

Before I'm talking about sitemap plugin for wordpress, let me explains a little bit what sitemap is all about. Basically, sitemap is a hierarchical visual model of the pages of a website and it help users to navigate through a website that has more than one page by showing users a diagram of the entire site's contents (analogous to book's table of content).

Sitemap file is essential as far as search engines are concerned as it helps to speed up the discovery of your pages. However, there are few other factors that influence the crawling process like number of backlinks pointing to your website, uniqueness and relevancy of your content and few other things.

So, sitemap file has SEO-effect on your blog by making sure that all the pages in your blog can be found by search engines bots. So in order to create a sitemap file for WordPress blog, you can use Google sitemap generator (this is the plugin that I used for my blog). This plugin will create a compliant sitemap (XML-sitemap) and this format is supported by Google, YAHOO and MSN Search.

Me: I just installed the plugin yesterday, and there seems to be a significant progress in my search engines ranks for "melayu boleh" keyword. I could probably be wrong about this as there are many other factors that affect my blog position. However, this is a useful plugin for your blog after all.

Technorati Tags: wordpress plugin, google sitemap, melayu boleh, SEO
