I wrote few posts (here, here and here) on removal tools that are specifically developed by software manufacturers in order to help users to remove completely applications from their computer so that they won't have any conflicts with other applications. So here is another antivirus removal tool, AVG remover which purposely meant to remove all parts of AVG installation on your PC including its registry and related files.

You can always uninstall AVG antivirus via Add/Remove program but if the uninstallation fails repeatedly, you can always use AVG Remover to remove it once and for all. This useful tool is available on both 32-bit and 64-bit Windows OS.

Comodo HIPS and Firewall Leak Test Suite

There is no way we could tell how good an antivirus is especially for people who know little or nothing about computer. When we are about to decide which antivirus to go for we may collect as many information as we could from magazines, websites and friend's recommendation but their recommendations may subject to several factors such as personal experience. So you may still end up confused with mix up feedbacks from them.

Leak test is one good way of performing security test by simulating different kind of manipulations and attacks on a computer system WITHOUT actually harming our machines. At the end of the tests there are some sort of statistics telling you which tests your antivirus software passes with flying color and which it fails.

Comodo Leak test is one of the many leak tests available on the net. It is a portable security software that will test an antivirus software that is installed on your computer (Windows) with a total of 34 different tests. It provides the means to find out if your computer system is fully or partially protected against common attacks found remotely and locally.

Prevent Autorun.inf Infection with Panda USB AutoRun Vaccine

The AUTORUN.INF is a configuration file from removable drives that decides which actions to perform when a new external storage device, such as a DVD or USB drive is plugged in to the PC. Unfortunately, malwares like Heap41a take full advantage of this feature in order to spread themselves. This is achieved by copying a malicious executable onto the removable drives and infecting the autorun.inf file, instructing its own malicious file to run silently in the background.

Panda USB and AutoRun Vaccine is a freeware developed by Panda Security to stop the spreading of viruses via removable drives.

As the name suggests, USB Vaccine "vaccinates" PC by disabling Autorun.inf completely so that there is no program could run from any removable drives. In other word, disabling the autorun feature will effectively raise security level of your computer.

For the time being, Panda USB and Autorun Vaccine works only on FAT and FAT 32 USB drives.

Nod32 Removal Tool – Remove Completely NOD32 Antivirus

Occasionally, uninstalling an antivirus program using Windows Removal program is not sufficient due to system integration. We may either end up fail to uninstall them completely or in worst case, we don't manage to uninstall a particular software at all. Protect USB Flash Drive from Virus with Fake Dummy File

USB Flash Drive is a tiny useful device that is used ubiquitously nowadays because of its small size, make it easy for mobile people to bring along virtually everything (digital) with them. With the space capacity grows exponentially, inversely proportional to its price, it becomes a mundane device for everyone to have. One thing that boggles users is virus or malicious script that can easily bind itself to the device and infect most of its content.

Previously I wrote about Mx One that acts as a standalone antivirus specifically for USB flash drive and USB WriteProtector that could effectively write-protect pen drives.

In this post I will show you how to protect your pen drive by creating fake dummy file. The idea here is to cheat virus so that it "sees" our pen drive is already full, so it will not be able to write itself. In order to do that you first need to check the exact free space on your pen drive. Right click on the pen drive and select "properties".

With the information obtained, you need to type in the following line of code. Change your drive letter and USB flash drive space (in byte) accordingly.

fsutil file createnew F:\DummyFile 7168172032

You are done if you are using windows XP. Your pen drive should be safe from virus. Unfortunately, Windows Vista users need to take additional step because of its tight security. You need to make sure that FSUTIL gets full administrator privilege before you could successfully run the command.

Alternative method

If you don't want to mess up with the command and Vista tight security, you can use some applications that can do the job on the fly.

Dummy File Creator

With dummy file creator you can fill up each and every single byte in your pen drive. It takes a few minute to complete creating the dummy file especially if the size is in the region of gigabytes.

Upload and Scan Files Online for FREE at Filterbit

Scanning antivirus for certain files is best done on a computer with latest virus definition installed. Unfortunately not all computers have antivirus system on them especially when we work on public computer in a not-so-well-maintained cyber cafe.
