iPhone OS 4.0 is "jailbreakable", not doubt about it. We have seen several videos of Comex, Geohotz and ih8sn0w showing off how iPhone OS 4.0 was jailbroken but none of them could tell us for sure when the tool would be released to the public. When everyone speculates the release will only be made after iPhone OS 4.0 official debut this summer, Dev Team surprised us by making the tool, Redsnow 0.9.5 available earlier than expected.

Although Dev Team has made the redsn0w 0.9.5 BETA available for public download, but they have a piece of advice for you:

Please note that this beta is not meant for the average end-user. There are many things "broken" with jailbroken apps in the 4.0beta1 environment right now [...] This beta redsn0w allows the developers behind those jailbroken apps (like MobileTerminal.app!) to fix their software before the general public gets iphoneOS 4.0.

Because it's meant for JB app developers, this beta redsn0w does not perform hactivation. You'll need a properly-registered developer UDID with Apple to get past the activation screen. For similar reasons, there is no Windows version of this beta redsn0w (since apps are developed on MacOSX). Please don't pirate Apple software.

FREE Opera Mini now available in the App Store

When I heard Opera submitted Opera mini in App Store, there was nothing that cross my mind except it will be declined outright. However, Apple proves otherwise by accepting Opera Mini into its App Store repository. You can download this small application via App Store and having alternative browser to do your internet browsing.

The interface of Opera Mini appears to be the same like on every other handset and as expected, it renders pages beautifully. The best part about Opera Mini is "Opera Turbo". The images on a web page is compressed and this allows a page to load almost twice as fast when you are on a slow network.

Wait no more. Fire up iTunes, download Opera Mini and start browsing.

As we already know, iPhone OS 4.0 is not going to be available until this summer (June) and iPad is only going to get this upgrade this fall. What is shown at Apple's special event recently is only meant for developers and not for normal users. It's just a couple of months away but bear in mind there is a long list of new exciting features in this upgrade.

Some people can hardly resist to get their hands dirty playing with these new features in iPhone OS 4.0 Beta and badly hope they could get an earlier copy of it.

No Full iPhone OS 4.0 Upgrade for iPhone 3G and iPod Touch 2G

iPhone OS 4 comes with massive new features and it's definitely a great news to some Apple fans. Some? Yup, not all users will enjoy the full features of the latest iPhone OS 4.0. iPod Touch 2G wouldn't have a chance to get the most standout feature, multi-tasking. More surprisingly, iPhone 3G that is still on sale worldwide is having the same fate as the iPod Touch 2G.

It seems Apple is giving people a good reason why they should switch to a brand new iPhone 3GS and iPod Touch 3G but having iPhone 3G discriminated from getting iPhone OS 4.0 full upgrade is an awkward move by Apple; at least from users' eyes. Apple might have a different opinion. The iPhone 3G is already old with processor and RAM are at half capacity of iPhone 3GS. Apple will definitely not want to risk having sluggish performance on its products.

Fix iTunes 9.1 & Blackra1n Tethered iPhone 3.1.2 Jailbreak Issue with BlackBreeze

iTunes 9.1 was just released with several improvements. Unfortunately this isn't really a good news for many iPhone users because iTunes 9.1 causes syncing issue to those who have tethered jailbroken iPhone 3.1.2 using Blackra1n.

But don't freak out for those who have already upgraded to iTunes 9.1; ih8sn0w has come up with a new fix to Blackra1n RC3 for the syncing issue. The procedure is very simply. All you need to do is start BlackBreeze, select Blackra1n RC3 and locate where to save the fixed version of Blackra1n. Upon clicking "Fix Ra1n" a new file will be created in your chosen directory that goes by the name, blackra1n-fixed.exe.

Execute blackra1n-fixed.exe and use it to start your tethered iPhone, once completed you will be able to sync your iPhone 3.1.2 with iTunes 9.1

Blacksn0w RC2 Final: Unlock iPhone 3.1.3 Baseband 05.11.07

BlackSn0w RC2 final for iPhone 3.1.3 (baseband 05.11.07) is finally available in the Cydia. It's worth to mention that BlackSn0w RC2 is not really an official release by GeoHot; nothing new. Rather, this one is basically Geohot’s original unlock and the recent fix by MSFT Guy for firmware 3.1.3 being repackaged. This release essentially fixes the Wifi Blacksn0w to Unlock iPhone OS 3.1.3 baseband 05.11.07 and the bootloop issues that affect users on the last test release.

In order to successfully install it, your iPhone 3G and 3GS needs to be jailbroken first. Blacksnow RC2 Final will only install if you are running 3.1.2 or 3.1.3 and if your baseband (05.11.07) is present. In order to get the Blacksnow RC2 Final, you need to launch Cydia and add the following source http://cydia.pushfix.info once it is installed. Search for blacksn0w rc2 final and you should be good to go.

Untethered Jailbreak for iPod Touch, iPhone 3.1.3 and iPad

To all iPhone and iPod Touch fans, here is a good news. Geohot is currently working on a tool that can jailbreak iPod Touch and iPhone running on 3.1.3 firmware with latest baseband. With the latest development, it is very highly likely that the upcoming iPad is able to be jailbroken as well.

Here's the quote from his blog.

The jailbreak is all software based, and is as simple to use as blackra1n. It is completely untethered, works on all current tethered models(ipt2, 3gs, ipt3), and will probably work on iPad too.

He is not only claiming that it can be done but also put it into demo video (and of course it meets requirements for a genuine jailbreak video) to prove it which can be found below.

If this thing works on the iPad, it will definitely open to a wide possibilities of allowing the device to multi-task, hence perform much productive tasks. iPhone Hacked Fast at Pwn2Own Hacking Contest 2010

During the Pwn2Own hacking contest this week over at CanSecWest 2010, it only took merely 20 seconds to get an iPhone hacked. This success also came along with Apple’s Safari browser & Internet Explorer 8. DV Labs sponsors the annual hacking contest. Contestant who is able to successfully exploit a target will walk away with a ZDI cash prize and related benefits. The event spread over three days and offered targets on multiple platforms.

In this 2010 contest, Ralf Philipp Weinmann & Vincenzo Iozzo exhibited an astonishing exploit on the iphone that allows them to send content of a targeted iPhone to an online website they already setup. They managed to copy the entire SMS database of the targeted iPhone including deleted text messages to the server. And did I mention it is done in 20 seconds!

In fact, Weinmann said he had been set to compete in last year's Pwn2Own contest but had to abandon his plans at the last minute when he discovered his attack only worked on jail-broken phones, which have been hacked to run unapproved applications. Jail-breaking circumvents the iPhone's memory protections, but the Pwn2Own rules force contestants to use unmodified phones.

The Pwn2Own contest pays contestants for their exploit code, which leverages software flaws to give the attacker a foothold on the machine being attacked. But because of the iPhone's sandbox architecture, Weinmann and Iozzo actually spent much more time working on their payload software.

To make their attack work, they used a technique called "return-oriented programming," in which they essentially cobble together instructions from different parts of the iPhone's memory. But even with this technique, the iPhone's sandbox restricted what they could do once they had hacked into the machine.

Both hackers were assisted by Halvar Flake, who claims Apple does have some protection in place for running malicious code on the iPhone, but it doesn’t cut it. "The way they implement code-signing is too lenient." Weinmann and Iozzo won a $15k cash prize and also the hijacked iPhone. For insight on how the hack works you can read it here.

What you need to know about Jailbreaking & Unlocking iPhone

Recently a friend of mine asked me how to fix the losing signal after he mistakenly updated the firmware to 3.1.3 on his locked iPhone 3G. I thought there should be an easy fix giving the fact that there are a lot tutorials on how to jailbreak and unlock iPhone. Turned out it's not that simple.

Before you run into any problem that can make your head spinning, there are few things you should know about in order to avoid them from hitting you hard. There are few terminologies that might be confusing for someone new to this device. Knowing what these jargons are all about is a good move to better prepare yourself as a new iPhone owner. So let's get going.

Officially Unlocked iPhone VS Locked iPhone

Locked iPhone limits the device exclusively to a particular cellphone network. Any attempts to insert simcard of other network will effectively be rejected and you will not be able to use your iPhone to its full capacity. This can be fixed by using hardware or software unlocking but it comes with risks. You may not be able to update the OS software to the latest version or worst of all device malfunction.

Officially unlocked iPhone, on the other hand, allows user to freely use any network carriers and enjoy every single update from the iPhone’s OS without losing the ability to use any carrier SIM in the device.

If you haven't bought one for yourself, the ONLY type of iPhone that you should consider buying is an officially unlocked iPhone unless you don't mind having a lot of headaches with the unlocking process.

I hardly give attention to anything related to how-to-jailbreak-or-unlock-iPhone because I bought unlocked iPhone set from Maxis Malaysia (iPhone 3GS) and Singapore set (my previous iPhone 3G).

Jailbreak - Technically, it means to break into and gain access to the entire Unix file system (to change the root of the directory tree to /). Simply put, it's a restricted area where normal users are not supposed to mess around. By jailbreaking, you can add applications restricted by Apple into your phone. You can even change (mod) icons, dock, wallpaper, chat bubbles, status bar, keyboard etc. The addition of these applications are done via an application called Cydia.

Granted, jailbreaking can unlock your iPhone to another level of excitement (with new applications and modding stuffs) but apparently it doesn't appeal me to indulge into jailbreaking my iPhone (at least for now).

Unlock - Unlike units from the list above (fully unlocked), iPhone from the United States and the UK are locked by AT&T and by O2 respectively. So you can't simply use the phone with other operators. There are several solutions such as turbosim, stealthsim, Sn0wbreeze etc out there to unlock your phone so that you can freely use your iPhone with any operator you like.

Note: Please read carefully the pros/cons as well as instruction on each solution (by googling) when you attempt to use any method of unlocking. There are several adverse effects that might be experienced by your iPhone such as signal fluctuation when making call, no Airplane Mode etc. Some solutions might not be working anymore that Proceed with caution.

Sounds scary? Sure it does. That's why it's important to give extra care when you do the above-mentioned activities. Do more readings on the net so you will know what to expect if an unlocking method is applied. It also helps you from being ripped off by certain parties that might want to take advantage on your lack of knowledge.

Disclaimer: Jailbreaking voids your warranty but it can be easily fixed by restoring the iPhone OS via iTunes.

iPhone 3G Firmware 3.0 Beta 2 for Apple Developers

Apple announced about its upcoming firmware 3.0 (see features list here) for iPod Touch and iPhone last month. The beta version of the firmware is currently available to iPhone developers and it is spreading fast on popular torrent websites as well. Unfortunately, iPhone 3G Firmware 3.0 Beta is not as stable as people might think of and that explains why many people are trying hard to downgrade their iPhone back to firmware 2.2.1.

After the first beta, Apple rolled out iPhone OS 3.0 beta 2 which is available to developers for download. In this release, push notifications and in-app purchasing are onboard together with its support for MMS and tethering, giving developers a chance to try them out.

Skype for iPhone Officially Available for Download

The long anticipated Skype for iPod touch and iPhone is now available in the App Store where you can download it for free. For iPod Touch users, a headset with an embedded microphone is required to make voice calls. With the Skype app, users can make FREE calls by using Wi-Fi to other Skype users and they can even make reduced price calls to traditional landline phones.

The Skype for iPhone looks great with phone numbers is used directly from your phone's address book and the existence of teleconference. One drawback that might disappoint users is that calls over cellular networks is not possible (only via Wi-Fi). Apparently this limitation was designed in such a way to compensate for the iPhone EDGE and the iPod Touch.

Yeah we know Skype for iPhone is short on some of the features its desktop counterpart has but taking into account this application is actually new and young, we could expect features such as SMS, file transfer, and voicemail making their ways in future versions.

iPhone firmware 3.0 features finally revealed at Macworld Expo San Francisco and the last minute rumors turned out to be true with many demanded futures like copy-paste, push functionality and MMS are making their way to be on-board.

Here is a list of interesting features.

In-App Commerce: Developers can sell their applications partially instead of selling the whole package
Accessories: Control and communicate with external hardware devices through Dock connector or Bluetooth
Peer to Peer: Protocol that allows an iPhone to find other local devices within the vicinity using Bluetooth

Landscape mode: Landscape mode keyboard works in all apps including mail!
Copy, Cut and Paste
Forward / Delete: Support for message forwarding and deleting individual messages in a conversation

The upgrade will come free for the iPhone users. Unfortunately iPod Touch users will have to pay $10 in order to get their devices upgraded. Currently, iPhone 3.0 SDK is available for developers and will be ready for public download in summer.

iPhone 4G Concept Design – A MacBook In a Phone

Recent rumor about Iphone 4G (3rd generation) captured attention of many enthusiasts across the blogosphere after unprecedented sales volume of more than 13 million units of its predecessor in 2008. The sleek design brilliantly crafted in iPhone 3G, has created sky high expectation for its successor but will the next generation deliver?

With Apple shows no interest on this rumor (via), it's too early to say anything about the next iPhone. Anyway, here's some of the new features:

3.2 Megapixel camera
Titanium and glass
True GPS
OLED screen
Removable battery
32 GB of space
Front camera for chat

The features look great, I hope they will be all implemented along with bluetooth transfer feature. 3.2 Megapixel camera is OK, but why not a 5 MP camera like other phones? Design wise, I personally think it's a big NO NO. The color scheme doesn't look good and I expect more rounded edge. And why a square home button?

I hope to see sexier design for iPhone 4G like Apple always do in its products.
