Apple Announces the New iPhone 3GS

Apple unveils the new 3rd Generation of iPhone, the iPhone 3GS; with the S apparently stands for speed. The iPhone 3GS brings a lot of hardware and software enhancement as compared to its predecessor. This device comes in the same form factor and design as the previous iPhone 3G but it brings mobile computing to the next level by introducing capabilities of smart video and a low price factor.

Here is the interesting features in iPhone 3GS.

Faster - This new iPhone 3GS is way faster than any of the previous generation of iPhones.
Eco-Friendly - This one comes to save the nature right out-of-the-box.
Video capability - Equipped with a 3.0 auto-focus camera

iPhone 3G Firmware 3.0 Beta 2 for Apple Developers

Apple announced about its upcoming firmware 3.0 (see features list here) for iPod Touch and iPhone last month. The beta version of the firmware is currently available to iPhone developers and it is spreading fast on popular torrent websites as well. Unfortunately, iPhone 3G Firmware 3.0 Beta is not as stable as people might think of and that explains why many people are trying hard to downgrade their iPhone back to firmware 2.2.1.

After the first beta, Apple rolled out iPhone OS 3.0 beta 2 which is available to developers for download. In this release, push notifications and in-app purchasing are onboard together with its support for MMS and tethering, giving developers a chance to try them out.

For those who are not part of Apple Developer Program, you are still able to get the iPhone Firmware 3.0 Beta 2 on popular torrent website. For what is worth, the leaked iPhone 3G Firmware 3.0 Beta 2 carries a build number of 7A259g.

Skype for iPhone Officially Available for Download

The long anticipated Skype for iPod touch and iPhone is now available in the App Store where you can download it for free. For iPod Touch users, a headset with an embedded microphone is required to make voice calls. With the Skype app, users can make FREE calls by using Wi-Fi to other Skype users and they can even make reduced price calls to traditional landline phones.

The Skype for iPhone looks great with phone numbers is used directly from your phone's address book and the existence of teleconference. One drawback that might disappoint users is that calls over cellular networks is not possible (only via Wi-Fi). Apparently this limitation was designed in such a way to compensate for the iPhone EDGE and the iPod Touch.

Yeah we know Skype for iPhone is short on some of the features its desktop counterpart has but taking into account this application is actually new and young, we could expect features such as SMS, file transfer, and voicemail making their ways in future versions.

iPhone firmware 3.0 features finally revealed at Macworld Expo San Francisco and the last minute rumors turned out to be true with many demanded futures like copy-paste, push functionality and MMS are making their way to be on-board.

Here is a list of interesting features.

In-App Commerce: Developers can sell their applications partially instead of selling the whole package
Accessories: Control and communicate with external hardware devices through Dock connector or Bluetooth
Peer to Peer: Protocol that allows an iPhone to find other local devices within the vicinity using Bluetooth
Push Notification
Landscape mode: Landscape mode keyboard works in all apps including mail!
Copy, Cut and Paste
Forward / Delete: Support for message forwarding and deleting individual messages in a conversation
Spotlight: Search virtually everything including apps, text, messages or simply anything
Multimedia messaging: Sending photos or audio files through messages

The upgrade will come free for the iPhone users. Unfortunately iPod Touch users will have to pay $10 in order to get their devices upgraded. Currently, iPhone 3.0 SDK is available for developers and will be ready for public download in summer.

iPhone 4G Concept Design – A MacBook In a Phone

Recent rumor about Iphone 4G (3rd generation) captured attention of many enthusiasts across the blogosphere after unprecedented sales volume of more than 13 million units of its predecessor in 2008. The sleek design brilliantly crafted in iPhone 3G, has created sky high expectation for its successor but will the next generation deliver?

With Apple shows no interest on this rumor (via), it's too early to say anything about the next iPhone. Anyway, here's some of the new features:

3.2 Megapixel camera
Titanium and glass
True GPS
OLED screen
Removable battery
32 GB of space
Front camera for chat

The features look great, I hope they will be all implemented along with bluetooth transfer feature. 3.2 Megapixel camera is OK, but why not a 5 MP camera like other phones? Design wise, I personally think it's a big NO NO. The color scheme doesn't look good and I expect more rounded edge. And why a square home button?

I hope to see sexier design for iPhone 4G like Apple always do in its products.

Adobe and Apple Working Together on Flash for iPhone

Flash is a very popular web plug-in that is used to deliver animation and video content on the web. Apple's iPhone however has notably not supported Flash since its launch. Apparently allowing Flash on iPhone would just be too dangerous for a company like Apple that enjoys exerting total dominance over its hardware and the software that runs on it. This could come as major disappointment to iPhone owners, as the lack of Flash support has been a paramount complaint about this revolutionary smartphone since its release.

This scenario is about to change when Adobe's Chief Executive Officer Shantanu Narayen has revealed that Adobe is working with Apple on bringing Flash support to the iPhone.

"It's a hard technical challenge, and that's part of the reason Apple and Adobe are collaborating", Narayen said today in a Bloomberg Television interview from the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. The ball is in our court. The onus is on us to deliver.

A year ago this idea generated little interest for Apple's CEO, Steve Jobs. He remained skeptical with the nature of Flash which obviously resource-hogging for small processors and low memory smartphone. A slimmed down version or the Flash Lite seems to be the best solution for iPhone but might not work as expected by iPhone's users.

The reason behind this development is not clear but it might be related to the announcement of Adobe in last November about the collaboration with ARM to create an optimized implementation of Flash specifically for the ARM11 family of processors. Apple probably envisages the benefit that it could reap since iPhone processor is based on those processors architecture.

Apple’s iPhone 2.2.1 Firmware Ready for Download

Apple just released its iPhone 2.2.1 software update last Tuesday. There's nothing to get excited about since this latest update has no new significant features except fixes and minor improvements. You can update your iPhone to the latest firmware by simply connecting your device to your computer. iTunes will take care of the download and installation right after you confirm to upgrade your iPhone.

Speaking of the update, it improves Safari's stability and fixes image issue in which pictures saved from Mail don't display properly in the Camera Roll. That's it! Though it has been much rumored that the addition of support for push notifications will be included, it's simply not in this update.

Don't worry, it will definitely come in the future, perhaps along with Bluetooth feature, who knows :)

Both download links have resume support, so you may need to use any download managers to handle the download. Once the download is completed, plug in your iPhone to your PC. Press and hold "shift" button while clicking on the update button (iTunes interface). This will effectively open a windows popup where you can locate the downloaded firmware. The rest is pretty self-explanatory.

Yellowsnow is out for Download: Unlock Your iPhone 3G 2.2

Yellowsnow, the most anticipating and biggest New Year's gift for iPhone 3G community is finally out and ready to be downloaded. Yellowsnow is essentially the ultimate hacking utility to unlock iPhone 3G firmware 2.2 and is specially brought by Dev Team (previously engineered similar tool to unlock iPod Touch and iPhone 2G). It was initially scheduled to be unleashed on New Year’s Eve of 2009 but for some reasons it came out a bit late.

This particular unlock works exclusively with baseband 02.28.00 (it means it works on baseband 02.28.00 ONLY and not the previous ones) which comes with iPhone OS v2.2. So, for those who have pwned their iPhone to 2.2 without a full restore will need to restore to 2.2 directly in iTunes and then use QuickPwn to activate otherwise your baseband might be outdated.
