Mac User: Ripping DVDs with HandBrake

Author: eches | Files under Apple

One real problem with commercial DVDs is they are all copy-protected which effectively deny you from "ripping" them off into the iTunes as you can do on a music CD. A special tool that can remove this copy protection as it extracts the video content is needed and even better if it can convert the video right away into a format suitable for playback on your iPhone or iPod.

Note: Don't get me wrong, I’m talking about movies you actually own not movies you’ve borrowed or rented.

As a Mac user, you are like the rest of us; most likely eager to rip a DVD at one point of their life with computers. HandBrake is free application that has been around for some time and is the most preferred choice for most Mac users for ripping and encoding DVD content. The recent release of this wonderful HandBrake, the 0.9.4, brings bug fixes and many improvements. Anyway, here is a list of some of the new features included in this latest release.

  • Overall speed increases
  • 32-bit and 64-bit versions (10% fasteron 64-bit)
  • Improvements to x264 video encoder. Thus better, smaller and faster encoding
  • Improved preview feature
  • New integrated subtitle features
